2 rides on the Pussy
Make hay while the sun shines! A couple of Peter Fields regular crew have been away for the past weeks and the coming weeks so when I was again invited to dive off the Magnolia ThunderPussy – I didn’t need to be asked twice!
A couple of weeks ago I had my first Thunder Pussy ride and was introduced to the Apollo Barge which was, for me, a new wreck. This weekend I had two rides and two new wrecks, the SS Myola and the SS Undola.
On Good Friday we headed south out of Port Hacking to the wreck of the SS Undola which is in approx 42 metres of water off the Royal National Park in Sydney’s south. This small colliers loss was tragic as she went down with 21 souls. She wasn’t too far from land either, only 2 kms from Garlie beach, but 2km in big sea’s at night must have felt like 2000km’s.

It was great to finally get to the Undola as I had tried to dive this wreck previously but the skipper had issues finding it so we ended up on another wreck called the Tuggerah.
The Undola is a nice wreck, plenty to see and at a managable depth. It reminded me of the Oakland off Port Stephens in that it has a bow section and stern section showing with the mid section covered in sand, however the Undola has a boiler whereas the Oakland doesn’t.
We had nice blue 21 degree water for the dive and a clear sunny sky so good light for photography. I wanted to refine my tripod techniques even though I knew this wreck would be covered in fish which isn’t good for timed exposures.
In the end it turned out to be a good experience in terms of handling the tripod but a waste of time for getting decent images with fifty trillion fish covering the wreck and I ended up taking several hand held frames at 1/30th and 1/50th of a second but trying to keep the f stop up so as to reduce softness on the edges as I was shooting at 10mm.
As you can see, I also managed to snap Phil just as his strobe fired. This pic shows the angle of coverage of an Ikelite DS-51 strobe without a diffuser.
On Saturday morning we headed out from Rose Bay bound for the wreck of the SS Myola off Sydney’s Northern Beaches. Over 20 years ago this wreck was discovered by Peter and his mate John Riley so it was pretty cool that my first visit was going to be off Peter’s boat.
As we made our way out towards the heads we passed a beautiful red boat called the Northern Light. Everyone looked and commented at the same time and then suddenly Peter’s goes…”Thats Rolf Bjelke’s boat”, so we turn around and came alongside..”Did that boat once belong to Rolfe Bjelke?”..”thats me!”…”ah it is”…turns out that Peter and Rolf had meet 30 years ago in Chile, indeed they had even dived the German Battleship Dresden together.
Rolf has been sailing the world for many years and has been named “Sailor of the Year”, has sailed the equivalent of going to the moon and back and he is one of the few people to have sailed around both the Antarctic and the Arctic. Check out this link for a preview of one of his wifes books.
So on to the Myola..we had calm, almost flat sea’s with a slight current, viz was good yet not as clear as the previous day but the temp was good and I didn’t feel cold despite being in a wetsuit.
The Myola is a very interesting wreck, highlights for this first visit were the two huge boilers and the stern section which includes what looks like the engine crank shaft, part of the prop and rudder. I’ll definitely be coming back to visit this wreck again, I can already imagine a couple of shots I want to capture.

The other news from my weekend is that my 5D MkII housing is one the way…Yippeee!! Eta is the end of the month so I may have some full frame shots to show very soon. BTW, I finally have had to invest in some decent insurance that covers floods and it turns out you can now get flood insurance in Austrlia from an Australian company and at a resonable rate…www.protectsure.com.au worth checking out.
Cheers for now!
