Comments are off for this postBack to Bare Island
Once upon a time I used to always look at shots of Weedy Seadragons taken from underneath and go “that dragon was forced up”
Then one dive at Jervis Bay when I was on a rocky slope a Weedy came over a rock above me swan right over me, if I had the right lens it would have been a great shot. I still suspect for most dragon shots taken from below the dragon has been forced up but I definitely wouldn’t put money on it anymore.
And it was likewise for shots of dragon’s eggs…”that dragon is being held” .. Well I know differently after today.
After a break of a few months I went to Bare Island today. Viz there has been poor what with a new electric cable being placed across the bay and Port Botany being expanded but with most of the dredging work having been completed I was optimistic of viz above 3 metres, all I needed since I had the 100mm on.
The viz was Ok at about 4 metre’s but boy it was cold at the western corner, I reckon it was maybe 14 degree’s, 15 max. It was at that corner that I came across a male Weedy with eggs. My experience is that Weedy’s with eggs don’t move too far, plus this guy was feeding, so I knew I could position in close to him if I was calm and patient.
No sooner that I was in position than he came over to me and positioned right in front of the camera…I even had to back off!
Happy days, got my egg shot with eyes and no touching or damage done!
